We’re Back: Phantom-Four Returns

We’re Back — And The Timing Couldn’t Be Better

If you were here before, welcome back. If you’re new, you picked a good moment to arrive.

Phantom-Four went dark for much longer than I care to admit. Life got in the way and the team dissolved after which the site quietly disappeared. If you used to come here, my apologies for that.

However something shifted in the drone market recently that made coming back feel less like nostalgia and more like a necessity. I’ll get to that shortly.

What Happened

The original site ran for years with a crew of four. Between us we had 80+ years of combined photography and videography experience. And we were genuinely proud of what we built; honest reviews and real comparisons. No sponsored fluff.

But then life happened. and the team ended up going their separate ways. And when that happened, the site went with it.

What unfortunately didn’t survive when this occurred was the backup and the mailing list. Years of content, gone. So what you’ll find here going forward is rebuilt from memory, updated for 2026, and written entirely by a team of one, me. If you were a subscriber to the mailing list before, I’m sorry about that and I’d love to have you back. The signup form is in the sidebar and it takes ten seconds. Same deal as always: just drone content, no spam.

So who am I?
Hi, I’m Walter. I flew every Phantom DJI ever made as well as various other drones (yes, I know. They’re quadcopters but let’s face it, hardly anybody says that) and have been in this hobby since before most current drones existed. And that experience luckily doesn’t disappear just because the site did.

Why Now

Well, here’s the reason I felt it’s truly worth rebuilding the site:

The drone market is more confusing than it has ever been.

DJI, which has dominated consumer drones for a decade, now faces serious import restrictions in the US. It’s the new reality buyers are navigating in the US right now. And the response from a lot of drone sites has been either to ignore it entirely or to replace genuine analysis with rushed coverage of alternatives they clearly know nothing about. So not really different from what a lot of sites were like before this site went down unfortunately.

But that gap is exactly what I want this site to fill.

I’ve spent time with Autel, with Parrot, and I understand the DJI ecosystem deeply enough to give you honest comparisons rather than just spec tables with a recommendation bolted on at the end.

If you’re trying to figure out whether to buy DJI while you still can, switch to Autel, wait for Skydio to release something consumer-friendly, go with another manufacturer entirely or just keep flying what you have, this is the right place to help you make up your mind.

What’s Different This Time

It’s just me now. No team, no editorial meetings, no divided responsibilities. That means fewer posts than before but more focus. Every piece I publish will be something I’m genuinely confident in rather than something that needed to ship on a schedule.

The scope is broader. The original site was DJI-first. That made sense then. It doesn’t now. You’ll find honest coverage of American brands, European brands, and wherever the market goes from here.

The archive is gone but coming back slowly. I’m rebuilding the most useful historical content from memory, particularly older model comparisons that still matter for used-market buyers. That’s a long-term project rather than a short-term priority though. New content comes first as I want to help you make your decisions in today’s market.

What’s Staying The Same

Honest reviews. No paid placements, no sponsored recommendations. If I think a drone isn’t worth buying I’ll say so, and I’ll tell you why. Now I’ll be honest, if a manufacturer wants to send me a drone to test and do a review like has happened in the past, I will of course do that. However, they will not have an editorial input and the review will be just that, my point of view. Regardless of whether that’s good or bad.

Affiliate links. We used them in the past and I will keep using them. Amazon, B&H, Adorama, as well as a few others. They cost you nothing and occasionally save you a click while helping me keep the site up and running. I mention this upfront because I think you deserve to know, not because I’m required to say it. The links don’t change the recommendations. They never did.

Practical focus. I’m not interested in technical showboating. I’m interested in helping you make good decisions about the equipment that costs real money. After all, we can only spend our money once.

What To Read First

The site is lean right now by design. Here’s where I’d start depending on where you are:

Not sure which drone to buy in 2026? Start with the buying guide. It maps the current lineup to budgets and use cases without assuming you already know the landscape.

Trying to decide between DJI and the alternatives? The DJI vs Autel vs Skydio brand comparison is the most relevant thing on the site right now given what’s happening in the market.

Researching a specific model? Individual reviews are going up steadily. The Mavic 3, Air 3, and Mini 4 Pro are already there.

Subscribe to the newsletter if you want to know when new content lands. No spam. No list-selling. Just drone coverage worth reading.

Happy flights.

Walter
